Buses in Thailand

Government buses (operated by companies like The Transport Co. Ltd.) are generally basic, reliable, and offer budget pricing. Private buses vary widely, from similar economy class to VIP coaches with more legroom and amenities. Always check the specific class of service when booking.

You can book at major bus terminals in person or use online booking platforms common in Thailand. For popular routes and during holidays, booking in advance is recommended. Always use the official booking systems or trusted affiliate partners, which you can access through widgets on travel sites for current options.

Buses depart from three main terminals: Mo Chit (North & Northeast), Sai Tai Mai (Southern & Western routes), and Ekkamai (Eastern routes). Confirm your terminal based on your destination, as they are far apart in the city. Arrive early to find your specific departure bay.

Typically, one large suitcase stored in the luggage compartment is included. There is limited overhead storage for a small bag. Luggage space is not usually an issue on standard routes. But for overnight trips with many passengers, boarding early can secure better storage space.

Overnight buses are a common budget option. Safety standards vary. VIP or First-Class buses offer reclining seats and blankets. Keep valuables secure and on your person. Be prepared for air conditioning that can be very cold, so dress in layers. General travel vigilance is advised.

Most provincial bus stations are on the city outskirts. Songthaews (shared pick-up truck taxis) or local tuk-tuks are common for the short trip into town. In Bangkok, use taxis or ride-hail apps from the terminals. Have your destination written in Thai to show the driver.

For short, local routes, you can often pay cash to a conductor on board. For long-distance routes, you must purchase a ticket in advance at the station counter or online. Boarding without a pre-purchased ticket is generally not possible for intercity travel.
